Zelig Kalmanovich (1885-1944) was a scholar, translator, YIVO‘s co-head, and a prophet to a lot of people in the Vilna Ghetto. This diary written in the Vilna Ghetto not only describes the daily life, hopes and efforts of the people to retain humanity in inhuman conditions, but also author‘s thoughts about the reasons why such tragedy struck Jewish people and about the future of the Jewish people and Jewish culture after the war. This publication puts together the shards and separate fragments of a testimony whose manuscript has been dispersed in the maelstrom of history, stored today in parts in Vilnius and in New York.
